Liverpool need to beat Madrid by two goals with a clean sheet or three if Madrid score in order to advance.
Liverpool have struggled to find anything like their best form through much of the 2020-21 season, but on Wednesday evening when Real Madrid come to Anfield for the second leg of their Champions League quarter final tie, the Reds will need to do just that.
To overturn a 3-1 deficit and advance to face Chelsea in the semis, Liverpool will need to look a little more like the side that won it all in Europe in 2019 and captured the Premier League title in 2020. It will be difficult, but Jürgen Klopp believes it’s possible.
“Football is football, we all know that, and there are a lot of things possible,” Klopp said. “I understand that we speak now about the result, but for me much more important is the performance. We have to play like ourselves, we have to play as good as we can.
“It’s about winning football games and that’s the target for tomorrow. If that will end up in a comeback, I have no idea but I never had before. It’s just we have to start believing in that again. If that happens, if we can see that it’s possible, then we have a chance.”
If this Liverpool side can rediscover their best and their belief, then certainly they have a chance, and while it will still be difficult the math will be fairly simple. They’re down 3-1 with an away goal, so a 2-0 victory levels it and give them the away goal tie breaker.
If Madrid get an away goal of their own, though, it means Liverpool would need to win tonight by three to take the tie outright, while a 3-1 Liverpool victory matching Madrid’s first leg margin after 90 minutes would see the game go to extra time and perhaps penalties.
“If they would go 1-0 up or whatever in a normal game we would have to score two to win it or score one to get a point,” the Liverpool manager added about the situation his side now faces. “The point wouldn’t help [tonight], 2-1 wouldn’t help. So that’s the situation.
“We have to be 100% on our absolutely top level to have a chance to make it. But that’s possible, that we are at our 100%, so we should try it.”
